The success of the strongest fair
With the 33rd Expominer, Fira de Barcelona's International Minerals, Fossils and Jewellery Exhibition has become a leading event for the promotion and direct sale of minerals, fossils, gems and jewellery. The 2011 edition was a resounding success, showing the largest collection of minerals, fossils, gems and jewellery in Spain.
As well as the largest selection of natural stones. More than 125 exhibitors from 46 countries brought a sparkle to an event that also, for the first time, was headed by the well-known palaeontologist Eudald Carbonell as president of its organising committee.
The 12,000 visitors saw the first specimen of lava from the undersea eruption last year off the coast of the Canary Island of El Hierro, kindly lent by the eruption's monitoring committee with the permission of the Island Council.
In fact, volcanoes were the big attraction of last year's fair, with all sorts of activities being organised to explain this natural phenomenon, from documentaries to workshops. The highlights included a small-scale reproduction of a molten lava eruption and the showing of several short films on minerals.
Expominer also gave the kids an opportunity to take their first steps in the world of palaeontology, with an exhibition about dinosaurs, and to find out what geology is with activities such as gold-panning.
